NFL announces Eagles as designated team for Brazil game

Monday saw the announcement by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that the Philadelphia Eagles will be the team assigned to play the league’s inaugural game in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Eagles’ Week 1 matchup in South America will be against an opponent to be disclosed prior to the spring release of the 2024 regular season schedule. This Friday, September 6, 2024, game will mark the first Friday night of Week 1 in more than 50 years for the NFL (Cardinals vs. Rams, Sept. 18, 1970).

The NFL declared in December that one of the league’s regular-season games would take place in Brazil in 2024. The venue, Corinthians Arena, has played host to several major athletic events, including six FIFA Men’s World Cup matches in 2014.

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, stated, “The league’s decision to play the game in the first week of the NFL 2024 season is a true testament to their confidence in our work as host city.” “Having this historic spectacle on the eve of Independence Day and driving a great economic impact and job creation for São Paulo, will spotlight our city as a globally relevant destination for the world’s most exciting sport and entertainment events.”
