Tommy Lloyd’s coaching contract with Arizona is extended until the 2028–2029 season.

Tommy Lloyd, the head coach of Arizona men’s basketball, and the University of Arizona announced a five-year contract extension on Monday, February 19. With the Arizona Board of Regents’ approval, the contract guarantees Lloyd will be the Wildcats’ head coach until at least 2029.

“To have finally completed a long-term extension here at the University of Arizona, I am humbled and grateful,” Lloyd stated. “The support of our donors, the Board of Regents, our players, our fans, and our alumni gives me energy.” said President Dr. Robert C. Robbins.

The deal states that during the five-year extension period, all of Lloyd’s compensation—base salary, additional tasks pay, and yearly funding from Nike and  agreements—will come from donations. His payment will span the first year’s $5.25 million to the last year’s $6 million.

Lloyd has guided Arizona to an outstanding 81-16 overall record since joining the team in 2021, with a 43-11 record in Pac-12 Conference play. With a record-breaking 61 victories in his first two seasons, he built a name for himself fast. He also guided the Wildcats to back-to-back Pac-12 Tournament crowns in 2022 and 2023.

During his first season, Lloyd guided Arizona to an overall record of 33-4 and an 18-2 record in the Pac-12, which allowed them to win the regular-season title, the Pac-12 Championship, and a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. In addition, he won Pac-12 Coach of the Year and swept the National Coach of the Year (AP, NABC, USBWA) accolades.

Arizona has spent 54 weeks in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll under Lloyd’s direction, including 42 weeks in the top 10. For the first time in ten years, Lloyd led Arizona basketball to the top overall spot in the AP poll earlier this season.

“By resurrecting the University of Arizona men’s basketball program and making it one of the best in the country, Tommy has demonstrated his abilities as a championship coach, an outstanding leader, and a recruiter,” Robbins said. The fact that he will stay a Wildcat for many years to come makes us very happy.

Under Lloyd, McKale Center has solidified its reputation as an unbreakable fortress and grown to be both a feared and revered venue for NCAA basketball. boasting an incredible 95%
