Arizona State receives votes while Arizona falls in the college basketball rankings.
In The Associated Press men’s college basketball rankings, the Arizona Wildcats dropped two positions to sixth after splitting their weekend games at home versus the Washington schools.
Thanks to an upset victory over Washington State, the Arizona State Sun Devils (14–14) earned 17 points in the voting after doing the same. Whether those points were accidentally awarded to Arizona State is unclear, though.
After Arizona State’s thrilling comeback victory over the Cougars on Saturday, which ended in an overtime loss to the Washington Huskies, Bret Bloomquist of The El Paso Times placed the Sun Devils as the ninth-best team in the nation. Two days earlier in Tucson, WSU had defeated the then-No. 4 Wildcats (21-6) 77-74.
Apparently, there was no confusion regarding the two colleges in Arizona. Arizona was ranked No. 6 by Bloomquist, higher than its competitors.
Even so, Washington State rose two spots, to 19th, from its starting position of No. 21.
Other than the Huskies, who received four points, no other Pac-12 team received any votes.
In the most recent AP Poll released on Monday, the Houston Cougars climbed one rank to overtake the reigning national champion Connecticut and rose to the top of the list for the first time this season. Houston (24-3) is already the fifth team in the league to occupy the top spot this year.
In a survey in which South Florida cracked the rankings for the first time in program history, Purdue moved up one position to No. 2, while the Huskies lost to Creighton and fell to third.
