Wolves boss makes bold Premier League title race claim after Liverpool ‘chaos’

After conceding that his Wolves team was unable to counter the “chaos” the Reds can incite, Gary O’Neil is confident that Liverpool

can contend for the Premier League championship this year.

The Molineux team’s well-deserved 1-0 halftime advantage was wiped out by an outstanding Liverpool second-half display as the

guests won 3-1 on Saturday.

It maintained a good start to the season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are now unbeaten in their last 16 top-flight matches.

And Wolves boss O’Neil, who previously worked at Liverpool’s Academy, admits the quality from the Reds’ bench was a telling factor.

“We can take a positive in that Liverpool are going to be a top side this year, they are going to be right up at the top of the league

without a doubt,” he said. “These aren’t the kind of games we are judged on.

“You look at the two sides and the gap in quality between us and Liverpool, it takes a big effort to close that and we did for a very long

time. The organisation, structure and quality of players helped us to bridge that gap.

“You know you’re not going to be the best side against Liverpool for the whole game. When we were on top we probably could have

taken one or two of our situations.

When they gained control and sent in (Darwin) Nunez and (Luis) Diaz, we started to lose a little energy, and you knew you had to fight

back. And with the score tied at one, Jose Sa didn’t have a lot of saves to make. Then we take an odd action, cause some confusion, and

give up a second goal. When you cause confusion against Liverpool, they are skilled at it.

At 1-1, O’Neil continued, “They had tonnes of the ball, but we knew where they would be. It took a lot of work from everyone to push

Liverpool that close up until the final eighty minutes.

The game was greatly affected by their substitutes. But we gave up a second goal that was completely absurd. Our players have a

history of playing quite freely, and we need to eliminate that unpredictable play until the last third.
