In order to attempt to provide new manager Russell Martin a team capable of battling for an immediate promotion back to English football’s top division for the next season, no less than 13 senior players departed the club while eight more were brought in.

The Saints may need to make some more adjustments to the squad once the market reopens in January, though, if they are to be successful with that during the current season considering that they are presently in tenth position in the Championship standings, 11 points outside of the automatic promotion spots.

In the meanwhile, there are several players on the Saints’ present roster whose talent suggests they may, once more, draw interest from other places around the turn of the year, which might be the point when they leave the club.

But which players may be the subject of some important negotiations for Martin’s team at the turn of the year?

Here, we’ve looked at one incoming and two exiting players at Southampton during the January transfer window to assist determine.

Out: Kyle Walker-Peters

It did felt like somewhat of a coup for Southampton to have maintained hold of Walker-Peters by the time this summer’s transfer window closed, given his obvious Premier League quality.

However, the England international right-back had other clubs interested in him as well. These clubs were Arsenal, Fulham, Roma, and Lens.

Walker-Peters may be interested in any of those positions, and each one should have the resources to close a deal, so Southampton may find it challenging to secure his services once the new year arrives.

Out: Che Adams

Che Adams, a striker for Southampton, was another player that generated a lot of talk during the summer transfer window.

The Scotland striker was reportedly close to joining Everton at one time, and Wolves was also said to have shown a late interest in him. However, no deal for the forward eventually materialized.

Adams has yet to agree to a new contract at St Mary’s, and given that strikers are always in demand, there is a case to be made that the door may still be open for him to walk somewhere in January.

In: Nathan Wood

With the additions of Ryan Manning and Flynn Downes, both of whom played for him at the Welsh club Swansea, Russell Martin did draw on his links to the Welsh club.

Other Swans players were also mentioned in connection with him, including Nathan Wood, with the Saints apparently making several offers for the center defender.

Given that Wood was reportedly eager to work with Martin once more, there may be a possibility for Southampton to complete this deal once more in the summer, especially given that the 21-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with Swansea, giving January their final opportunity to sell him.
