Saints Appoint Colin Calderwood As New First Team Coach - Southampton News | The Ugly Inside

Southampton manager Russell Martin has added another member to his coaching staff with the news that Colin Calderwood is now first-team coach at St Mary’s.
Southampton FC have announced the appointment of Colin Calderwood as first team coach.
Calderwood will be remembered by many as a player who, after 400 games in the lower leagues, joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 1993.
He played 163 games for Spurs before joining Aston Villa in 1999.
, he then played for both Nottingham Forest & Notts County before retiring.
He initially began his coaching career at Spurs as reserve team coach, then managed Northampton Town, where he led them to promotion from League Two in 2006, before joined Nottingham Forest as manager in the summer of the same year.
Forest were in League One at the time and in his first season he took them to the play-offs, but they lost to Yeovil.
In his second season he led them to automatic promotion but his season in the Championship would end prematurely and he was sacked in December 2008, ironically a week after taking charge of Forest won 2–0 at St Mary’s in a very toxic atmosphere.
It wasn’t long before he quit and a few weeks later he was appointed first team manager of Newcastle United, who would be relegated at the end of that season.
However, he retained his position and helped coach Chris Hughton take over the Toon immediately.
in 2009/10.
He then became a football nomad, spending a year as coach at Hibernian, then joining Hughton again at Birmingham, a few years at Norwich and staying with Hughton when he joined Brighton in 2015.
Then it was back to another team former club Aston Villa in November 2016 for Steve Bruce.
In December 2018, he was appointed manager of Cambridge, staying for just over a year before being sacked.
In October 2020 he joined Blackpool as assistant manager and helped them gain promotion to the Championship, but in June 2021 he joined Northampton as assistant manager, where he He remained until joining Saints today.
Southampton fans will be delighted with this appointment as this is a man who, at 58 years old, has a wealth of experience as a player, not only as a coach but also as a coach.
How to be a coach.
Many people have commented that Russell Martin’s coaching staff lack real-world experience, most only have experience in the lower leagues and their careers also mirror Martin’s own career.
So the appointment of Calderwood must be good news, a member of the coaching staff with a real long experience at the highest level, both as a player and as a coach.
It will also provide a new perspective on implementation and independent insight into the situation.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox said: “We are delighted that Colin has agreed to join us and further strengthen Russell’s backroom team.
“He has a wealth of experience gained over many years as a coach and manager which we know will be invaluable to our team.
” This is clearly an appointment by Wilcox, who seems to have recognized the fact that the coaching staff on offer does not have enough experience, I imagine he has spoken to Russell Martin about this and the need must provide the manager with someone who can provide not only that experience but also new ideas.
Calderwood is a centre-back, we hope to add the necessary level of training, no one denies that Saints may have the strongest team in this division but they are poor and prone to mistakes, hopefully Hopefully this will allow us to not only refine the passing game which has improved so much over the past month but a new perspective.
