£500k star admits ‘interest from Rangers’ and opens door to Ibrox move
Former Motherwell striker Kevin van Veen is ‘interested’ by Rangers ahead of a £500,000 move to Groningen in the summer, opening the door to a return to the Scottish Premier League .
The experienced journeyman may have doubts as to whether he really fits the Rangers model, but with the interest shown from Ibrox in the summer and the interest currently hovering over the striker’s head Coupled with the uncertainty this January window makes this deal a noteworthy deal going forward.
As Football Insider recently reported, Rangers are keen to strengthen Philippe Clement’s side in attack, but their ability to do so may be limited after spending big in the summer.
A player like Kevin van Veen can meet more criteria than he realizes.
Van Veen has found the back of the net 40 times in his 83 matches for Motherwell and is a proven scorer in his Scottish football career.
And the 32-year-old is unlikely to claim bankruptcy costs.
Especially after losing his place on Groningen’s bench.
Rangers’ interest in Kevin van Veen will be considered.
“It was a lot harder than I expected.
“Of course I listened to Motherwell because I had a successful time there, but last season my agent told me that Rangers were definitely interested in me.
But at my age, I might not fit her profile “I’ve had a lot of happy times in Scotland, and that I would never rule anything out.
Groningen paid £500,000 to sign the one-time Scunthorpe United and Northampton Town ace over the summer. Despite scoring five times in 13 appearances in the Dutch second tier, Van Veen has been dropped from the XI after what the Scottish Sun call a ‘fall out’ with manager Dirk Lukkien.
Prolific at Motherwell
“The coach and I had a discussion,” Van Veen explains. “And I crossed a line in the language I used with him. Since then, I’ve been on the bench and that’s caused a bit of interest.
“My agent’s had calls from six or seven clubs asking about the possibility of a loan in January. That would be the sensible alternative if things stay the same.”
Rangers have been in superb form since Clement replaced Mick Beale in the dugout, though doubts persist over their centre-forward options. Danilo and Kemar Roofe have suffered their fair share of fitness issues, while Cyriel Dessers remains frantic and frustrating.
