News that Rangers have agreed a new deal with Ross McCausland will come as no surprise after recent comments from Philippe Clement.

Ross McCausland’s pre-international break form had turned heads and led to much debate surrounding the winger in the vacuum of the national fortnight.

Having impressed in several substitute appearances before being handed a first start against Livingston before the break, the winger was handed a first Northern Ireland cap against Finland.

With Ross McCausland out of contract next summer, attentions quickly turned to a new deal with murmurs of interest from the Premier League and Serie A.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Aberdeen, Philippe Clement dismissed any interest and suggested that he’d put his trust in McCausland before offering him greater exposure to the first team.

“I have no idea about that,” Clement said of possible suitors.

“That’s always something for the player and his agent. We’re talking with him about a new contract. I have a good feeling around that, but it needs to be on paper first.

“I could have treated the situation in a different way and first let him sign a contract before I let him play. I didn’t do that because I know how important Glasgow Rangers is for us.”

Challenge set for young Ulsterman

Breaking through into the Rangers first team hasn’t been a problem for several Academy graduates in recent seasons.

The likes of Nathan Patterson, Leon King, Alex Lowry, Bailey Rice and Zak Lovelace are a testament to a youth set-up producing debutants.

But the challenge for young Ulsterman Ross McCausland will be kicking on after this new contract and proving he can make a tangible difference to the first team squad.

For all the breakthrough names in recent seasons, Nathan Patterson aside there hasn’t been one who has shown it consistently nor helped the club financially.

As Rangers fans prepare to congratulate Ross McCausland on a new contract, it’s on the winger to help buck this trend.
