WDBJ, Blacksburg, Va. After a collegiate career filled with incidents that left Cassell Coliseum spectators in shock, the athlete who was in charge of many of those moments had her own bizarre moment on Sunday in Blacksburg. Legendary Hokie Liz Kitley, a three-time ACC player of the year, said, “It’s difficult for me to comprehend at the moment.” Kitley’s famous number 33 jersey was retired and kept in the Cassell’s rafters throughout the half of Sunday’s game versus Louisville. She used her skill to expand the team’s fan base when she was at Tech.

“It’s so, so special to have something so permanent,” she says. It’s awesome to feel that I made that big of an influence on the program and the community. She chuckles and says, “I’m going to keep bringing people back here so I can show off a little bit.” Liz was selected by the Las Vegas Aces in the 2024 NBA Draft and is currently a member of the franchise. She recovered there after a knee injury that ended her college career nearly a year ago. The record keeping center still prioritizes the team, even on the appropriately named “Liz Kitley night,” in the hopes that a gathering like this will increase public support for the current Hokie roster.

It’s more about these folks having a flavor of the current team than it is about me, and hopefully they will keep coming. The females, in my opinion, truly deserve that. I’m hoping that this year’s girls can maintain that momentum and that people will continue to support them in the same way that they supported us. On Liz Kitley night, Virginia Tech defeated Louisville 70-65. All rights reserved. Copyright 2025 WDBJ.
