Big earning Rangers star should be first January transfer exit
The re-emergence of Leon Balogun has seen a greater consistency in Rangers defence in terms of selection but what it has also done is push Ben Davies further down the pecking order.
Signed for a reported £4m by Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a series of injuries and a couple of high profile errors has seen his stock amongst the Ibrox faithful fall considerably.
With Philippe Clement looking to bring his own players in, moving on those who aren’t getting game time but still have value will be key and you’d have to think that Rangers will be listening to offers for Ben Davies.
There is obviously a reason why Philippe Clement prefers both Balogun and John Souttar.
With Leon King and Dujon Sterling also in the squad, there is no point having a spare defender on £27,000 per week, according to Salary Sport.
Not only is that a big wage that you would expect a key player to be on, it is the sort of money that could be reallocated elsewhere for someone that could contribute an awful lot more than Ben Davies currently is for Rangers.
The squad isn’t as bloated as it once was but the Gers boss is right, there are areas that are well-stocked and others that are short.
We currently have one fully fit central striker with Kemar Roofe’s fitness always hanging by a thread and if it hadn’t been for Ross McCausland’s breakthrough, we’d have almost no natural wide players either.
It’s not even a question of getting back what we paid for Davies, anything close would be considered to free up the wage and to give the manager something to spend.
His reputation in England is still respectable and a summer move to Stoke City on deadline day shows that there will be interest.
And, in fairness, he has been outstanding in games against Real Betis and Sparta Prague in the Europa League.
Clement claims that he isn’t a magician, we’ll see at the end of the January transfer window just how true this is.
