Adie Moses says Devante Cole will be a viable option for top-end League One clubs this summer, but does not see the striker leading the line for Derby County in the Championship.
Cole is free to join another club this summer after he was released by the Tykes, where he scored 18 goals this season and was their top scorer. But after Barnsley failed to win promotion via the playoffs after losing to Bolton, they decided against offering the 29-year-old a new deal.
That has put a host of clubs on alert, particularly with Derby set to be in the market for a new centre-forward this summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship. Cole was in red-hot form until February but the goals dried up in the latter stages of the season after he had threatened to walk away with the golden boot award.

But former Barnsley defender Moses, who is a summariser for the Tykes at the BBC, told Derbyshire Live that does not feel the Rams would be his ideal destination.
“He lost his way a little bit,” he said. “What I liked about Cole is the fans were on his back in the season before last. He was running down a cul-de-sac and things like that but he turned it around. He scored goals and that’s what I really liked about him.
“It shows a good strong character when you are taking flak from the supporters and then become one of their favourite players. But I wouldn’t have seen him leading the line at a club like Derby if I am honest. He seems to be a top-end League One striker rather than at a top end Championship club, but that’s me just being honest.”
