Breking news: A decommitted four-star running back may favor the Texas Longhorns…

For the SMU Mustangs, Rickey Stewart represented a significant investment. He had been committed to SMU since June 11, but regrettably, the Mustangs were unable to keep onto him.

On Wednesday, Stewart posted a notice on social media announcing his departure from SMU.
That’s a significant loss for SMU based on the stats. In addition to being one of the better prospects from Texas, a state known for producing talent, Stewart is ranked among the nation’s top running backs. He is ranked No. 22 in the 2025 class as a running back by 247Sports composite board.

With commitments from several schools, including Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, and Oregon, it’s reasonable to predict that Stewart will emerge as one of the 2025 trail’s most sought-after uncommitted prospects. Having said that, pay attention to the Longhorns, who might wind up becoming the favorite due to his dedication.

His main source for recruits is Tashard Choice, the coach of the Texas running backs, and Choice is excellent in that capacity. He was recognized as the coach who first brought current NFL player Jahmyr Gibbs to Georgia Tech, and he just recruited five-star running back CJ Baxter to the Longhorns.

Stewart had committed to SMU, but Texas had also been wooing him rather aggressively. At a junior day event on January 20, the Longhorns extended an offer to him.

Following that visit, Stewart told On3, “It was really exciting being here today, a real experience I’ve never felt before.” “When I received the offer, I was overly excited. Both Coach Choice and Coach Sark are excellent coaches. Two coaches with whom I am truly becoming close. I’m learning how to be a better person in addition to football.

The Longhorns appear to be in the driver’s seat to sign the gifted running back after he decided to leave SMU.

In 2023, Stewart ran for Chapel Hill High School (Tyler, Texas) 2,855 yards and 40 touchdowns.
