DONE DEAL: Fullham and Celtic £80m star landed into verbal agrees deal…

Fulham and Celtic summer transfer target Sammie Szmodics missed out on the prestigious Championship Player of the Season Award this weekend, with fans of the second tier quick to claim the prolific 28-year-old had been ‘robbed’.

The Blackburn Rovers attacking midfielder has plundered 24 goals this season and is leading the race for the Championship top scorer award. Szmodics also has four assists in what has been a sparkling campaign for the breakthrough star.

It was Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville who took home the Player of the Season award over Szmodics. The Whites man has 17 goals and eight assists in the league this season.

The news could be of significance to fans of Fulham and Celtic, as well as Luton Town and Brentford, with all the clubs said to be courting Szmodics ahead of a potential summer swoop.

Football followers were quick to voice their anger at the Blackburn Rovers man missing out on the award. Taking to X, one user wrote: “Absolute robbery! Szmodics should’ve got it!”

Another said: “I’m a Leeds fan and I’m pleased for him naturally but thought it would be Szmodics. Carried a poor team. Scored loads. Best opposition player I’ve seen at Elland Road this season.”

Leicester City and Preston North End fans were also in the comments admitting that it should have been the Blackburn Rovers star to take home the award. One person even labelled the decision ‘the biggest joke known to man’.

Szmodics’ fine form has unsurprisingly generated transfer talk of a switch to the Premier League – Blackburn Rovers sit 17th in the Championship, not close to promotion. The midfielder has another two years left on his contract at Ewood Park.

The Sun reproted that Luton Town are interested in the star, whether or not they survive the Premier League drop, with Fulham, Brentford and Celtic linked with a transfer for the player in recent months. Former England international and pundit Carlton Palmer slapped a £20 million price tag on Szmodics, suggesting a Premier League switch would not come cheaply.
