‘Some things I’ve got completely wrong’: Reading FC manager gives honest reflection on year of survival

The Royals concluded their campaign with a disappointing defeat to bottom of the table and already relegated Watford on the final day, however Reading had already secured survival before the final day.

“Obviously it wasn’t the way we wanted the season to end, but it was a game of being clinical and Watford on the day just pipped it,” said Gilbert following Reading’s 3-2 loss to the Hornets

We created more than enough, we just didn’t take ours as well as Watford and that’s probably not the first time we’ve said that this season.

“But again credit to these girls who could have quite easily thrown the towel going 1-0 down, especially after last week’s achievement, but they kept going right until the end.”

Reflecting on the season as a whole, Gilbert admitted that he was left was a bittersweet feeling.

“Obviously, we’ve had some real highs and some real lows, so Sunday’s match against Watford felt very bittersweet,” he concluded.

Now that the season is coming to a conclusion, that’s how I personally feel.

“This year has been incredible, far more intense than I ever imagined.”
“I know I’m entirely wrong about certain things, but in other areas, I’m really happy with the work that’s been done.”

“We’ve learned a lot this year, and it’s been a real challenge given everything we’ve faced and what has been documented.”

It is therefore a true accomplishment for us to have arrived at this stage, safe within the division for an additional year.

Before the season began, did we set higher standards for ourselves? Yes, without doubt.

However, I believe that we should be encouraged by the work that has been done when faced with a great deal of uncertainty and unfamiliar material.
