Rangers: Barry Ferguson makes accusation after ‘huge’ Ibrox turn of events

Barry Ferguson calls for Rangers 'big characters' as Ibrox great reflects on a week to forget - Daily Record

Barry Ferguson has accused Todd Cantwell of ignoring Philippe Clement’s tactical instructions in Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Aris on Thursday night.

Cantwell, 25, was substituted off after just 36 minutes and replaced by Ross McCausland, who went on to score the Gers’ equaliser in the Europa League group-stage clash at Ibrox.

Ex-Light Blues star Ferguson believes Cantwell was hooked because he was failing to follow Clement’s orders and instead of sticking out on the wing, he kept drifting into the middle.

Of course we all know he’s better suited to playing through the middle but when your manager gives you a job to do, you simply have to do it,” Ferguson said on the Daily Record website (2 December).

“What Cantwell’s not going to get away with is giving his manager the rubber ear, especially while putting in the kind of sub-standard display he registered against Aris. Clement had to tell him once too often about drifting in off the right flank when he’d been ordered to keep his width and when he failed to carry out his manager’s instruction, it gave the Belgian no choice but to act.

“Fair play to big Phil, replacing one of your star men midway through the first half was a huge call. But it sent out a message that he’s the boss and now it’s up to Todd to respond.”

We don’t meant to talk down Rangers here but it wasn’t that long ago when Cantwell was playing well in the Premier League and being linked with the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool [The Express].

He ended up leaving Norwich after barely playing for them in the Championship to join a Scottish Premiership club.

Obviously Rangers are a huge club but it’s quite the fall from grace for someone who was once being compared to Portuguese football legend Deco.

There are serious issues with Cantwell’s behaviour.

Maybe he believed all the hype too much when he was younger and that gave him the idea he had a god-given talent that he didn’t need to work on.

Maybe he thinks he knows better than Clement.

The hard truth is that he doesn’t and that for all the talent he’s got, he wastes it with petulance, stupidity and cheating.

Stop messing about Todd and start playing football as best as you can in the manner you’re told to by your manager.

Maybe one day the Liverpools and Man Uniteds of the world will start watching you again if you do.
