Rangers: Keown sends ominous manager message to Philippe Clement

Gary Keown has warned Philippe Clement to not get too weighed down with life as the Rangers manager after he was pictured in public.

An Italian restaurant shared an image of the Belgian boss just weeks after Celtic manager Brenden Rodgers had also visited.

Mail on Sunday columnist Keown believes that the photographer did Clement a “favour” by taking it because it’s shown early doors to the Rangers manager that he’s in the public eye as much as anyone in Glasgow.

And Keown’s warned Clement that the football needs to come first and if he loses sight of that, he could end up like Pedro Caixinha.

“It gets to them all in the end. Even breaks some,” said Keown in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (10 December, page 95) when speaking about the pressure of managing an Old Firm club.

“Clement knows what he is dealing with now. He might not embrace it exactly, but he needs to tolerate it and deal with it. Otherwise, he’ll end up joining the ranks of those sitting in the Tony Mowbray Suit six months after being bulleted with the underpants on the head and pencils up the nose, asking the fairies why the dog barked and the caravan moved on.”

That’s the case almost everywhere in the world, really.

Sure, it’s probably more intense in Glasgow than elsewhere Clement has managed in the past but there’s no doubt that he’s been recognised in restaurants before, had fans question his decisions to his face or even insulted by them.

That kind of thing isn’t endemic to the Old Firm.

Clement knows what he’s doing.

He’s so far seemed to be a really level-headed manager who’s gone about his job fairly quietly while also picking up the results.

It’s not been perfect but we’d rather have a quiet boss who just gets on with it instead of some loudmouth from London who’d rather talk about Celtic than get on with his own job.
