Kirk Cousins, #8, and Justin Jefferson (#18) of the Minnesota Vikings are pictured together.
In 2018, the Minnesota Vikings created history by giving Kirk Cousins the first fully guaranteed deal in the history of the league; but, they don’t seem eager to do the same for Justin Jefferson.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, who was on KFAN with Paul Allen, the Vikings announcer, praised Jefferson for his perseverance in his ongoing negotiations for an extension.
Justin Jefferson is running out of patience, therefore they are “playing with fire” on several fronts, according to Florio. “I can state with confidence that J.J. is very patient, but that patience will have its limits and that the structure—rather than the money—continues to be the problem.
The Vikings are among the few organizations who won’t provide a complete guarantee for any player other than Kirk Cousins beyond the first year of his contract. You will eventually run into trouble with Justin Jefferson if you won’t make the same exception for him, Florio continued.
Florio continued by saying that the Vikings have a top-down guarantee policy. He asked ownership to think twice.
It’s the structure, not the money. Fans must make ownership answerable. The Wilfs have established these rules. Other than the quarterback position, they don’t want to guarantee full payment after the first year of the agreement, according to Florio. “You must grant the exception.”
Jefferson could end up earning the biggest salary of any non-quarterback in the league, but getting the best contract possible from a non-quarterback might take precedence over the agreement’s stated value.
In the meanwhile, Cousins is hoping to sign a fully guaranteed contract this summer, whether it be with the Vikings or another team. He has signed three such contracts in his six years in Minnesota.
