Despite having two little disappointments towards the conclusion of the game, Jon Dahl Tomasson was thrilled with Blackburn Rovers’ 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.
The three points Blackburn earned at Ewood Park on Saturday were well deserved, since Boro’s six-game winless streak had dropped them to the bottom of the Championship standings. Both teams had opportunities in a wild game, as recounted by Michael Carrick, but it’s fair to conclude that the home teams had the more definite advantages.
Tomasson’s displeasure with finishing finally came to light when Sammie Szmodics scored two well-executed goals either side of the break that were sufficient to secure the three points. He acknowledged that his side’s finishing should have been better, but felt that his team could have been in the lead at the half.
After the game, the Rovers manager commented, “It is a fantastic result; when we analyze Middlesbrough, we knew it would be a very difficult game.” “It was awesome to see how many opportunities we generated. We ought to have been leading 3-0 at the break. The fact that we failed to score those goals is disheartening. Then we scored some fantastic but really difficult goals.
“It can be hard in those circumstances after they score back.” During such times, our supporters supported us. Being able to watch the legends in the stadium and witnessing us triumph in our 5,000th league game was fantastic. Excellent work was put on display.
The second half was much more open as the hosts soon added some comfort with a second goal only four minutes after the restart. Blackburn should have been out of sight before halftime with better finishing, but the hosts swiftly added some comfort with a second goal just before the break.
However, much as they did after giving up in the first half, Boro came back strongly and this time scored when Matt Crooks, who was unmarked but appeared to be offside (except in the eyes of the one guy who mattered), converted Marcus Forss’s shot-cum-pass.
After then, the game became much more open and both teams had opportunities to score a fourth goal, though Boro made more of an effort to do so because they were seeking an equalizer. Given the nature of the Crooks goal, it made for a difficult finish for Tomasson’s team, one that he felt they didn’t deserve.
By the way, the linesman and referee will be dissatisfied with key times in the game when they watch this again, he said. Offside caused [the goal]. We all make mistakes, and I believe the referee and the linesman will be dissatisfied upon reflection. That’s a component of football. Errors happen, but he was completely by himself and three meters from the goal.
In the end, Blackburn did not suffer any consequences from the officiating blunder because they were awarded all three points. While all is going on, Boro is still winless and in desperate need of a win to start their season. On Tuesday night, they go to Sheffield Wednesday to take on one of just two remaining winless teams left in the division (the other being Swansea City).
