Nebraska commit Carter Nelson to play 11-man for first time at All-American Bowl
Ainsworth (Neb.) four-star TE Carter Nelson talks about the honor of being selected for the All-American Bowl, especially coming from 8-man football.
Ainsworth (Neb.) tight end Carter Nelson was virtually presented with his All-American Bowl jersey on
Wednesday night as part of the Road to the Dome tour.
The game itself will take place on January 6th, 2024 in San Antonio Texas.
“It’s amazing. Hopefully it goes to show that small town kids are athletes too. I was always doubted because I was
from a small town and I want to prove that no matter where you live, if you can play, you can with anybody.”
Nelson is one of the best all-around athletes in the country, and has been a dominant player in 8-man football. San
Antonio will be an adjustment for him that he is ready for.
“It’s exciting,” he said. “It will actually be my first time playing 11-man football so it will be kind of a crazy week for
me but it will give me a chance to know where I’m at before I go to college.”
Nelson was heavily recruited. His multi-sport background which includes strong track and field numbers and a state
title in the high-jump, pole vault, throwing the shot and discus, an 11.05 100-meter dash, and also standing out on
the basketball court all played a role.
In addition, his 25 total touchdowns, defensive production and even punting on the football field has also helped him
become a national Top 50 recruit.
Nelson chose Nebraska in June over Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, Alabama and others.
He has been excited to see Matt Rhule’s squad in their first year.
“Progress. It’s their first year and progress is all you can ask for,” Nelson said. “The culture has changed a lot. That’s
the biggest change and I’m looking forward to seeing that and being a part of it as they continued to build that.”
Nelson will not enroll early and will instead play out his senior year in basketball and then track. When he gets to
Nebraska, he hopes to contribute as soon as he can, but is appreciative of the staff’s honesty about that subject.
“They told me they’d love for me to play right away but they want the best on the field. So it’s the same as the other
coaches who explained that — they’ve never promised me anything because they do want the best on the field. That
was important to me also because they were being real with me,” he said.
247Sports rates Nelson the No. 42 overall prospect in the 2024 class.
This year’s game will be the 24th edition of the All-American Bowl. In that time, the game has had 562 future NFL
Draft choices, including 129 1st Round picks participate. 217 participants would go on to be a Pro Bowl selection and
97 have been Super Bowl champs.
Among the notable alumni are three straight 1st Overall selections in Bryce Young, Travon Walker and Trevor
Lawrence. Stefon Diggs, Odell Beckham Jr., Ezekiel Elliott, Derrick Henry, Joe Thomas, DK Metcalf, Micah Parsons,
Adrian Peterson, Vince Young, Chase Young and others have also participated in the game.
