OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT : Despite recent backlash, Celtics player Jayson Tatum considers Grant Williams to be a “great teammate.”

Jayson Tatum is supporting his former colleague.

In response to a social media post by an individual attacking Grant Williams, the top player for the Boston Celtics stated that the forward was a “great teammate.” Tatum and Williams were teammates in Boston for the previous four seasons before Williams joined the Charlotte Hornets.

In an interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub, Matt John of Heavy mentioned that Mike Gorman, a color analyst for the Boston Celtics, talked about Williams and said that “he was annoying to everybody” and “kind of wore thin.”

Williams, according to Gorman, reportedly offended Luka Dončić and other Dallas Mavericks players.

“An eighth, ninth, or 10th guy on your roster, so those guys are very replaceable,” Gorman stated. “This man is not good in the locker room. You won’t be the eighth or ninth player for very long if you’re a horrible locker room guy because you won’t be playing for the team for very long.”

This past offseason, Williams signed a four-year contract with the Mavericks after arriving in Dallas as part of a sign-and-trade with the Celtics.

But in the first season of that contract, he only appeared in 47 games for Dallas before being moved to the Hornets. Compared to his 8.1 points per game average with the Mavericks, he has averaged 13.4 points per game in 14 games since playing for Charlotte.

Despite not making the playoffs with the Hornets this year, he was a key member of the Celtics’ three Eastern Conference Finals championship teams during his four seasons there. Boston made it to the 2022 NBA Finals during one of those seasons, however they were ultimately defeated by the Warriors of Golden State.

Those Celtics teams included more valuable players than Tatum, but Tatum was obviously grateful for what Williams accomplished while he was in Boston.
