In a little more than a week, free agency will start, and a month later, the draft. The coaches of the New Orleans Saints are meeting with scouts and front office staff as the days lead up to the start of the league season to determine which areas they would rather target in free agency as opposed to the draft. The administration of rosters is a continuous process.
Questions will continue to arise. While there are undoubtedly holes in the squad that need to be filled, the Saints must also decide which players to hold onto or let go of. New Orleans’ approach to the offseason as a whole will be shaped by these four choices:
Penning should no longer be considered a first-round pick if he is your intended left tackle starter. As a backup plan, you may select a dependable backup at the position in free agency. Additionally, Penning circling the offensive line was alluded to by Jeff Ireland. Knowing where Penning fits in the plans has a big impact on the offseason, regardless of whether he plays offensive guard, offensive tackle, or on the right or left side.
This is a matter that has been discussed recently and will have a big impact on the Saints defense in 2024. Alontae Taylor might take over for Lattimore as the starting corner opposite Paulson Adebo if New Orleans decides to move on from him. It’s unlikely that you would maintain Taylor’s position in that hypothetical. This choice will determine the appearance and probably the performance of the Saints secondary.
Every year, New Orleans exceeds the pay cap by a significant amount before reducing it through restructurings. What a custom. They were still able to sign Derek Carr to a respectable-sized contract last summer even though they started above the cap. If they so choose, they can sign another high-profile player this year. A pass rusher would be a fantastic positional possibility, and if Danielle Hunter becomes available, he would be a perfect fit
