Fassel was better known as a head coach for the New York Giants and was named NFL coach of the year in 1997 and led the Giants to the 2001 Super Bowl.

He coached the Giants from 1997-2003. His team lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl after the 2000 season.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Fassel died of a heart attack. Fassel played college football before a brief career in the NFL and Canadian football.

He was also part of the coaching staffs at Denver, Oakland and Arizona.

In a statement, Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh said:

“Though never having worked directly with him, my dad did, and I was a part of the Eagles/Giants rivalry when he was head coach. I always respected and appreciated his approach to coaching and the way he treated his players.”

“My prayers are with the Fassel family, particularly Jim’s son John, who followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a great coach in the NFL.”
