The manager of Morecambe is happy with the foreign calls.
Although Derek Adams is pleased that four Morecambe players have been chosen for international duty, he regrets that this has delayed the team’s trip to Barrow AFC.

Eli King (Wales U21s), JJ McKiernan (Northern Ireland U21s), and Jacob Bedeau (Grenada) have all been chosen for their nations at various levels.

That meant Morecambe had met the requirement of three absent players to force a postponement, necessitating a rescheduling of Saturday’s trip to Holker Street.

After defeating Salford City last weekend, the Shrimps would have entered the match looking for back-to-back victories.

But they now have a free week ahead of them before they head back to Gillingham on Saturday, September 16.

Along with Bedeau, McKiernan, and King, Adam Mayor, a young player for the Shrimps, has been placed on standby for an England Under-20s training camp.

Adams was shocked there wasn’t a second call-up while being thrilled to see his men receiving acclaim on a global scale.

“We would have preferred to play the game, but with three or possibly four players missing from a squad of 22, it isn’t possible,” Morecambe’s manager remarked.

Although we would have been worn out, we could have tried to play it.

“I’m thrilled for the guys that were called up, and it’s fantastic for the football team as well.

“I’m particularly shocked that Michael Mellon hasn’t received a call-up from the Scotland Under-21 squad. It could have been more.

“I did call the Scottish FA to let them know how well he has been doing for us, but in my opinion, he has been brilliant for us,” the author said.

Mayor’s notification to England is another indication of how far along the 18-year-old has come since joining Morecambe’s first team setup the previous year.

After making his debut in August of last year against MK Dons, Mayor has now made 45 appearances and scored five goals.

Adam Mayor has performed admirably since moving into the first-team setting, according to Adams. He’s picked it up and is gaining knowledge every week.

“For a 19-year-old to be as strong as he is going forward and to understand his defensive duties by tracking back and making tackles like he does is fantastic and I’m really happy for him.’’
