Rangers hopes of signing Ben Godfrey fade as Tottenham ramp up pursuit

Any hope of seeing Ben Godfrey arrive at Rangers in January appears to be fading away amid rising interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Philippe Clement has been in the job for nearly two months now and will have been assessing his Rangers squad very closely

The Belgian will, of course, want new signings in an attempt to build the squad as he wants it.

Even after spending heavily over the summer, Rangers still need reinforcements with a number of positions needing some attention.

Centre back is one of them, but one target looks unlikely to arrive at Ibrox in January.

Rangers fighting losing battle in Ben Godfrey race

90Min reported in November that Rangers were in the mix to sign Everton defender Ben Godfrey in January.

This seemed like a surprise rumour at the time, even with Clement needing some new faces at the back.

Ben Davies hasn’t really kicked on, Leon Balogun is a stop-gap and John Souttar hasn’t really shown that he can be relied up on for the long term.

Godfrey’s pace would have made him an exciting Rangers addition, even just on loan until the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Bournemouth, Burnley and Crystal Palace were all mentioned too, giving Rangers a real battle.

Well, 90Min now add that Tottenham are ready to ramp up their pursuit of Godfrey in the hope of bringing him to North London.

It’s suggested that Everton would sell Godfrey for around £20million, a price tag far beyond that Rangers can realistically afford to pay.

Spurs have cash that Rangers just can’t compete with and Everton would likely prefer the straight cash from Spurs over a loan to Ibrox.

You could hardly blame Godfrey for preferring Tottenham to Rangers either, given that Spurs will be pushing for a top four finish in the Premier League.

Rangers will be appealing to many players in January, especially with Clement at the helm.

A speedy centre back would be a welcome addition for Rangers, but a signing like Hammarby’s Nathaniel Adjei may be more realistic than Godfrey.
