The Leeds United experience driving former Reading man forward to realise Portsmouth ambition
Conor Shaughnessy thinks Pompey will help him reach his full championship potential.
The talented defender also stated that there are many players at Fratton Park this year who can go up a division based on his experience playing at second-tier level with Leeds.
Shaughnessy made his debut at Elland Road as the team worked under Marcelo Bielsa to make the Premier League. Prior to moving down to League Two with Rochdale and Burton, he made 15 appearances while with the Whites, recording nine league appearances.
Although John Mousinho has praised Shaughnessy as having Championship-caliber play, Shaughnessy will be looking to live up to that praise at Fratton Park.
It’s a lovely remark, and I’ll accept it, Shaughnessy replied.
I played in about 15 games at that level throughout my brief career. So it’s a positive experience, and I absolutely want to be there.
Everyone has a fantastic chance to accomplish it here, and many of the players can raise their game. Having played at that level, I am aware of the requirements.
“We are confident enough to pull that off. We’ll take each game as it comes since the season is extremely lengthy, but based on what we’ve seen thus far, we have every reason to be optimistic.
The 27-year-old has generally remained anonymous, but he is receiving more praise after scoring a dramatic victory over Wycombe on Tuesday night. Shaughnessy acknowledged that, following his summer arrival, he couldn’t be more pleased with the course of his Pompey career.
I’m thrilled to be playing week in and week out,’ he continued. Any player, I believe, would agree that it makes a significant difference.
You should, in general, get better over your career, and I believe I have. Although there are ups and downs, I believe I can keep improving.
Since I am the way I am, I am probably the one who is flying beneath the radar. Being that way doesn’t worry me in the least.
So perhaps I can go on playing and advance. I enjoy being here and enjoying what I’m doing. You can see we’re having a fantastic time at this club, so maybe we can keep it continuing.
