Buffalo Bills center Mitch Morse is the team’s 2023 nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. The award, named after late Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., recognizes the player who “demonstrates on the field the qualities of great sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for opponents, and integrity in competition.” The winner will be announced at the annual NFL Honors award show just before the Super Bowl and receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice. Morse, a Bills captain for the last two seasons, described being nominated for the award as “awesome and humbling.”

“For me, it’s just trying to be a consistent person, and then hopefully that permeates and resonates through the rest of the guys,” Morse said. To Morse’s teammates, the 31-year-old center is the perfect representative for the Bills when it comes to sportsmanship. After news of Morse’s nomination broke, quarterback Josh Allen shared some heavy praise for the man snapping him the ball. “If there’s anybody on this team that deserves the Sportsmanship Award, it’s him,” Allen said. “He’s an all-time guy. One of the nicest dudes in the world. I love him. I love his family. He’s meant a lot to me in my career here, and that’s a special award.”

Last year, the award went to defensive lineman Calais Campbell, then of the Baltimore Ravens and now of the Atlanta Falcons. No offensive lineman nor Bills player has won the award in its nine-year history, so Morse is looking to be the first in both those categories.

Center Mitch Morse is the Buffalo Bills’ nominee for the ninth annual Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, the NFL announced today.

Each NFL team nominated one of its players for the award, which recognizes players around the league who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field. Created in 2014, the award honors the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Rooney Sr.

Morse, 31, has started 120 NFL games, 49 over four years with Kansas City, and 71 over the past five seasons with the Bills. He made his first Pro Bowl last season.

“Mitch is a class individual and a classy football player,” Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer said. “Every day in the meeting, when he’s ready, we’re ready. When we get on the field and he looks them in the eye, they know it’s time to go. And at the same time, he treats everybody with dignity. He doesn’t have to say much, he leads by action.”

Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell won the award last season. Former Bills wide receiver Robert Woods was the nominee of the Houston Texans. University at Buffalo great Khalil Mack was the nominee of the Los Angeles Chargers.
