Arizona Keeps Tommy Lloyd as Head Coach Until 2029
TUCSON, Arizona — Tommy Lloyd, the head coach of the University of Arizona men’s basketball team, and the school have reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension that, if approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, will keep Lloyd in Tucson until at least 2029.
“By turning the University of Arizona men’s basketball program back into one of the best in the country, Tommy has rekindled Wildcat pride and shown himself to be a championship coach, outstanding leader, and recruiter. “We are overjoyed that he will continue to be a Wildcat for many years to come,” Robert C. For the duration of the extension, donor funds have been obtained to entirely offset the increase in Lloyd’s university-paid remuneration. Under the terms of the five-year agreement, the total remuneration will start at $5,250,000 in year one and increase to $6,000,000 in year five. Lloyd has guided the Wildcats to an overall record of 81-16 since joining Arizona in 2021, with a 43-11 mark in Pac-12 Conference play. With 61 victories in his first two seasons as a head coach, he broke the NCAA record. Arizona won the Pac-12 regular season championship in 2022 and the Pac-12 Tournament in 2022 and 2023 under his leadership.
Under Lloyd, Arizona has been in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll for 52 weeks running (counting the poll from February 5) and has been in the top 10 for 41 of those weeks (as of February 12). For the first time in ten years, Arizona Basketball ranked first overall in the AP poll earlier this season.

The Associated Press, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and the NCAA Tournament honored Lloyd the National Coach of the Year after the Wildcats won the 2022 Pac-12 Conference Championship and made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in his first season. the Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year Award and the United States Basketball Writers Association. The team was granted another NCAA Tournament berth the following season.
During Lloyd’s leadership, McKale Center maintained its reputation as one of the best venues in the nation. In his first two seasons as head coach, the team topped the Pac-12 Conference in attendance, and this season, it is expected to lead the league once again. Arizona may continue its 40-year tradition of being the Pac-12’s top attendance leader by dominating the league in 2023–2024. Throughout the last three seasons, Lloyd’s teams have won 95% of their home games, maintaining the program’s dominance on the court.
The Wildcats have also been having a record-breaking season in the classroom, having twice broken the program record for semester GPA. The team most recently broke the previous record of 3.14 in the Spring 2022 semester with a GPA of 3.159 in the Fall 2023 semester, making it the best team GPA in a semester in program history.
Lloyd’s standing at the top international basketball levels has also increased as a result of his outstanding coaching at Arizona. He was just appointed head coach of the 2024 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup USA Basketball U18 National Team.
