SAD NEWS: He Is Gone Due To…

Herbie Kane has been released by Barnsley just days after he was linked with a move to Derby County. The former Liverpool midfielder is one of five players who have been released, along with Nicky Cadden, Robbie Cundy, Devante Cole and Jordan Williams.

Kane played an integral role as the Tykes reached the play-offs by registering nine goals from midfield and assisting in five others.

The 25-year-old had spoken of his desire to win promotion this season, and losing to Bolton in the play-offs has set his exit in stone. Derby will look to revamp their midfield this summer, particularly with Max Bird heading to Bristol City.

Cole’s departure from Oakwell is also no surprise with the 29-year-old finishing as the Tykes’ top scorer with 18 goals in League One. He too is expected to have several offers on the table.

Confirming their departures, Barnsley sporting director, Mladen Sormaz, said: “All five of the senior players leaving at the end of their contracts have served the club with distinction and can leave Oakwell knowing they made a difference on and off the field.

“When given the opportunity, Robbie gave everything he could for the shirt, Nicky was involved in some pivotal moments, Herbie got the Oakwell crowd off their feet on many occasions and Devante scored some crucial goals for the Reds. A special mention for Jordan, as a player he has been great, but as a captain and a leader he has really excelled. We wish them well for the future, I am sure they will always be welcomed back to Oakwell.

“I want to reassure fans that we are working hard to bring in some new faces who can help us achieve our goals next season and beyond.”
