SOUTHAMPTON’S summer exodus looks set to continue with Everton in talks over a £12m deal for striker Che Adams. Evatt: Players Failed to Stake Claim in Wigan Defeat

Plan boom it?' - Ian Evatt explains why he will keep faith with Bolton Wanderers playing style - Manchester Evening News

Ian Evatt says a number of players looking to cement their place in the Bolton side did themselves no favours in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Evatt made three changes to the side that cruised to victory over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday as Josh Sheehan and Aaron Morley returned to the midfield, while Dan Nlundulu deputised in place of the suspended Dion Charles.

Morley, whose first-half error gifted Latics their second goal, was replaced at the break, Sheehan was withdrawn after an hour, while Nlundulu struggled to make an impact as he completed 90 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Evatt admitted a hangover of having to play a large spell with 10 men in midweek potentially hampered his side against the Latics, whilst also stating how much he believes Wanderers missed the aforementioned Charles.

“We can and will all look back on the events of Tuesday night and the impact that had on the team,” Evatt told Bolton FM. “Playing an extra 30-35 minutes with 10 men certainly wouldn’t have helped.

“Losing our star striker who, in possession, helps us so much but also out of possession with that high press and the way we press – he’s a key part of that.

“We feel hard done to but we can’t make excuses. Today was an opportunity for others to step up and we just haven’t done.

“It’s back to the grass on Monday, back to the drawing board so to speak and we’ll work hard to recover for next week at Burton.

“If you look at the stats – there’s probably only one stat that matters, that we lost 4-0 – but we had 20 shots and four on target.

“We had 65-66% possession of the ball but we need to make that pay.

“Today, we just lost out on every moment. Every time we had a final-third decision or a big opportunity, we didn’t take it.

“Every time they entered our box, they managed to get on the end of things and take their chances.

“That’s something I didn’t see coming but maybe, being humble, this early in the season is a positive and we can recover from this to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
