The Seahawks have announced seven new coaches for 2024.
Shortly after being greeted with warmth by Seahawks staff members upon his arrival at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Mike Macdonald set about one of the most significant initial tasks of his new role as head coach: assembling a coaching staff.
“Throughout the entire process, we have been improving our staff,” Macdonald stated on Seattle Sports 710AM. “The first time we visited the plant was to introduce ourselves before the press conference. We had a quick meeting with everyone, but right away we started working on staff. Finding the appropriate folks to come in here and teach our club is a terrific process, but it takes time.”
Following that process, Macdonald and general manager/president of football operations John Schneider made a number of significant hires that are now official, and more are on the way:
The defensive coordinator, Aden Durde
The offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb
Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh
Leslie Frazier, head coach assistant
Karl Scott, coordinator of the defensive passing game and defensive backs
The offensive lineman Scott Huff
Kirk Olivadotti (inside the defensive line)
Having joined the Seahawks coaching staff in 2022 after previously working with the Minnesota Vikings, the University of Alabama, and several other collegiate teams, Scott is the only member of Pete Carroll’s coaching staff still in place.
Grubb has spent the last two years in the Pacific Northwest with the Huskies, so he won’t have to go far for his first NFL coaching position. During the 2022 season, Grubb was successful in leading their attack to lead the country in passing yards and finish second in overall offense per game. Additionally, the squad finished 14-1 last season and advanced to the College Football Playoff National Championship game. Prior to this, he attended Fresno State, Eastern Michigan, South Dakota State, and Sioux Falls. got the job at the University of Washington, and Macdonald noticed the collaborative work he and Kalen DeBoer produced from across the nation.
“He’s been on my radar, watching his teams perform, throughout the season, obviously thinking that a situation like this might come about,” added Macdonald. “After getting to know him over time, I realized what kind of guy he is—he’s always been successful wherever he’s gone. Simply put, I believe it speaks to his football spirit and the things he and Kalen have done over the years—everywhere they have gone, they have truly reinvented the local culture and have succeeded right away. I just admire his offensive plan and growth mindset, as well as his ability to adjust to the individuals he plays with.
