SHOCKING NEWS: AS Parramatta Eels Legendary Figure out for the…
Legend of rugby league Cooper Cronk has criticized Parramatta for choosing to go out on the open market in search of a “X-factor” player who might take Clint Gutherson’s place at fullback.
The SMH claims that Gutherson spoke with powerbrokers in Parramatta, who told him they would be seeking to add a player to strengthen their premiership credentials.
The 28-year-old supposedly gave the team his approval, so his position at fullback won’t necessarily be taken away from him.
Instead, the team is looking for a player to give its outside backs more vigor in an attempt to improve upon their 2022 grand final defeat.
Cronk, who was taken aback by the choice, described Gutherson as one of “the elite fullbacks in our game” and the captain of the Eels.
On NRL360 on Monday night, Cronk stated, “X-factor might score you a try or two, but Clint Gutherson will save you three or four.”
Like that’s all there is to it. He’s among the best defensive fullbacks in the game, in my opinion, and when you pair him with Brown and Moses in your halves, you have an X-factor.
“I find it crazy that Gutherson, your captain and an elite individual, is having an open discussion about bringing in the X-factor. This is really strange.”
Braith Anasta, host of NRL360, also questioned whether Brad Arthur would find the spark he needs if Gutherson moved to center.
Prior to leaving the club before the 2016 season, Gutherson started his career at Manly playing in the centers. He has experience playing at the Origin level.
After playing more than 160 games in the renowned blue and gold jersey, the gun fullback is still playing, and according to Cronk, the team shouldn’t “throw him out.”
“I think it’s crazy, but it’s about the only thing you could do if you want to add X-factor to your game,” Cronk remarked.
“It doesn’t work for me, and he’s one of our team’s best fullbacks. Maybe adjust his style of play instead of benching him.”
Like Cronk, rugby league veteran Billy Slater expressed disbelief at Parramatta’s unexpected decision, saying he “couldn’t believe” it.
Slater stated on Channel Nine, “I believe Clint Gutherson is one of the best fullbacks in the game.”
Sometimes we focus on the flashy, bright things that fullbacks can do, but Gutherson gives the team so much more than just flash and brilliance.
“I consider whether that player can help that squad win a competition when I look at that position.
