SUCKED TO HEAR: Dan Campbell shocked the fans by way of…

Head coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions is sticking by his choices despite the outcome after his team chose to go for it on fourth down rather than try a field goal twice during Sunday’s NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

“Those were decisions I don’t regret,” Campbell said to the press. “And it’s difficult, difficult because we fell through and it didn’t work out. However, I don’t. No, I don’t.”

The 49ers rallied to win 34–31 after the Lions, who had led by 17 points at the interval, collapsed in the second half. In two of those situations, Campbell actively attempted to prolong a possession rather than accept the point.
With a field goal, Detroit may have extended their lead to three points in the third quarter while led 24–10. Campbell decided to go for it instead, and Josh Reynolds failed to catch a ball from Jared Goff that would have resulted in the first down.

A field goal would have tied the score at 27 after the team fell behind in the fourth quarter, but Campbell went for it on fourth down once more. Goff’s pass went incomplete, allowing the 49ers to score a touchdown to win the game.

Campbell stated that he is not shocked by the general public’s criticism of his decision-making following the Lions’ first-ever Super Bowl disappointment.

“I understand the scrutiny I’ll get, that’s part of the gig, man,” he replied. “But, it just didn’t work out.”

Under Campbell, the Lions have a promising future, but Sunday’s defeat will follow the team for a long time. As the team looks to contend for a championship next season and beyond, Detroit can only hope that Campbell can apply the lessons he learned from his blunders.
