A Southampton player making £70,000 per week will be aiming to bounce back from a subpar start to his Saints career.

Mason Holgate, a standout for Southampton, received criticism when his debut last weekend against Sunderland ended in a 5-0 loss.
Despite acknowledging that he may have started the central defense too soon, manager Russell Martin is confident that he will bounce back from this early setback in his Saints career.
During the last week of the summer transfer window, Everton of the Premier League loaned Holgate to Southampton.

After having a “bad start” to his St. Mary’s career, Southampton star Mason Holgate “needs to get back to a place of positivity,” but transfer source Dean Jones has questioned if the defender has what it takes to succeed on the south coast.

Holgate was one of the newcomers to join the Saints after manager Russell Martin invested almost £18.5 million in additions during the summer transfer window.

Mason Holgate, newest news from Southampton

The Daily Echo reports that Martin took responsibility after Holgate received harsh abuse from fans after struggling on his Southampton debut last weekend.

According to the source, the Saints manager acknowledged he started the £70,000 per week center-back too soon after just one week of training with his new teammates, but maintained he would recover following Sunderland’s 5-0 thrashing at the Stadium of Light.

Respected writer Paul Brown recently told GIVEMESPORT that Holgate is a “decent player” and would show himself to be a wise Southampton signing if he can regain the form he shown while Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of Everton.

During the last week of the transfer window, the former England Under-21 international transferred from the Premier League Toffees to Saints on loan for the duration of the season.

Everton outcast Holgate on Southampton radar amid financial issues

After Holgate dropped down the Goodison Park hierarchy and had his playing time cut to only 559 minutes last season, Everton was willing to let him go.

What have Dean Jones’ comments on Holgate been?
Holgate arrived to Southampton with little confidence following a rocky stint on Everton’s roster, and Jones thinks Martin made a mistake by starting him off right away against Sunderland. However, the esteemed writer believes the former West Bromwich Albion loanee will become better with time and will aid the promotion-chasing team in maintaining clean sheets in their pursuit of an instant return to the Premier League.

What will Southampton do next?
When Southampton returns to play against Leicester City on September 15, Martin will be hoping to record his 71st victory as a manager, but he will be without a wide option due to injury.Because the transfer window had already closed days earlier, Moussa Djenepo was able to complete his return to Belgian club Standard Liege earlier this week despite Saints being unable to find a replacement.

According to estimates, Southampton has recovered somewhere around £3 million since the Mali international returned to his home country after being demoted from the top division.

Since the start of the current season, Djenepo has only played once, losing to League Two team Gillingham in the Carabao Cup. He has not been used as a substitute in any of the team’s other three Championship games.

The 25-year-old played 91 times while wearing a Southampton jersey, scoring five goals and dishing out as many assists.
