When Saints striker Paul Onuachu arrived in Turkey to complete a loan deal, he was met by a sizable contingent of Trabzonspor supporters.

The 29-year-old player, who was signed in January, is anticipated to complete a transfer to the Turkish team in the ensuing hours.

Before joining Saints, Onuachu, a Nigerian international who played for Genk in the Belgian Pro League, scored 16 goals in his final 13 matches. Nathan Jones was the manager at the time.

He has yet to score a goal for the St. Mary’s team and is not in Russell Martin’s plans; he only made one EFL Cup substitute appearance.

Onuachu had been a target of Genk’s attempts to re-sign him, but no action can be taken because the Belgian window has already closed.

Onuachu is scheduled to finish his Trabzonspor physical before the transfer window closes on September 15.

Onuachu’s transfer from Genk cost nearly £15 million, while Kamaldeen Sulemana’s transfer set a club record yet he is still with the team.

Paul is a huge addition for us and brings to a close what has been a very successful month in terms of hiring, according to Jones at the time.

“He’ll be a really positive addition to the squad,” the coach said. “He’s a handful to play against, has a tremendous record throughout his career, and he also brings great experience with him.”

A few weeks later, after losing 3-0 to Brentford and losing 2-1 to 10-man Wolves at home after taking the lead, Jones was fired.

In West London, Onuachu made his debut as a substitute and started the defeat by Wolves, in which former Saint Mario Lemina was sent off.

Under Jones’ successor, Ruben Selles, who had served as an assistant coach the whole season, Onuachu lost favor.

The Nigerian struggled in the decisive 1-0 loss against Leeds United after starting a triumph at Chelsea. The triumph versus Leicester City that followed was lost by him.

As Saints went the remainder of the season without winning a game and finished last in the league, Onuachu made just one more start and a few substitute appearances.

Joe Aribo, a striker for the Saints, was still called up for the Nigeria team during this month’s international break, thus Onuachu was also left out.

It’s unclear if this is because Onuachu isn’t active at the club level or to finish this transfer to Trabzonspor before the deadline expires.

Mislav Orsic, a fellow January failure, was also signed by Trabzonspor from Saints this summer, although the Croatian international is sidelined due to a preseason injury.

Nicolas Pepe, a 28-year-old winger for Arsenal who was acquired from Nice for £72 million just four years ago, was named to the Turkish team last week.
