Sunderland comeback was 'a matter of time' – Tony Mowbray - The Irish News

As the Black Cats get ready to travel to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers this week, here are all the most recent information on Sunderland’s injured players.

Sunderland travels to Blackburn Rovers in the middle of the week looking to extend their winning streak in the Championship to three after victories over QPR at the weekend and Southampton by a score of 5-0 a fortnight earlier. Injury kept Pierre Ekwah out of the action early at Loftus Road, while the Black Cats were missing Bradley Dack and Dennis Cirkin against QPR.

In the immediate wake of the victory in West London, Tony Mowbray discussed that trio. He is scheduled to provide another report on the eve of the trip to Ewood Park. Aji Alese and Eliezer Mayenda are two players for Sunderland who are getting close to being fully healthy.

Ekwah was taken off early in Sunderland’s victory over QPR, with Mowbray noting that the midfielder had been struggling with a dead leg the previous week and had suffered a further injury at Loftus Road. It is not believed to be a significant issue. According to Mowbray, who spoke at the weekend, “the issue was he got a bang in exactly the same place a couple of minutes in, he tried to run it off but he couldn’t so we just got him off.”

We’ll apply heat to it, give it a massage, and hopefully it’ll be okay for Wednesday [against Blackburn],” said the trainer.

Dack, a midfielder, was unable to play against QPR due to what Mowbray characterized as a “slight [muscle] strain,” making it unwise to risk him over the weekend. Bradley simply has a small strain, and he’s quite hopeful of being ready for Wednesday, according to Mowbray, who added that the 29-year-old is anticipated to be healthy to play against his former side Blackburn on Wednesday.

At QPR, defender Cirkin was also missing; Mowbray later disclosed that he had injured his hamstring. The head coach predicts that the left-back will be out for “a couple of weeks at least, and probably a little more” as a result of this issue. Given that timeline, it’s possible that he will be healthy shortly before the international break or, more likely, when the season returns following it.

Last-minute transfer from Paris St. Germain After recuperating from a serious injury, Pembele played only a few games last season and is currently out of shape. The defender made five appearances for PSG last season, including four starts, but he has yet to play a full 90 minutes due to a cruciate ligament injury he sustained in April 2022 while on loan at Bordeaux. The injury sidelined him until February of this year.
