Three potential wonderkids looking to create a name for themselves in South Wales are profiled by FLW.

This season, Cardiff City welcomed back Aaron Ramsey from his time spent at the academy. The club is now seeking to develop players of a similar caliber in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff has been forced to make decisions in previous seasons due to growing financial issues since imaginative recruitment is necessary to compete at this level.

In stark contrast to the situation five years ago, when the club was celebrating a return to the Premier League, the Bluebirds are currently fighting relegation from the second division.

The South Wales team has been slightly more effective so far this season, although they still ended 21st last year, barely five points above the bottom.

At Elland Road, Erol Bulut’s team earned a point in the opening weekend before suffering back-to-back league losses to Queens Park Rangers and Leicester City.

Despite a recent loss to Ipswich Town, the team keeps any immediate relegation danger at bay thanks to a lone victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite a shortage of funding, nine new or returning players have entered the pitch as City looks to move up the division. With proven players like Rubin Colwill and Aaron Ramsey on Bulut’s team, the Turkish coach may look to some emerging talent to give his team an advantage during a challenging Championship campaign.

Ollie Tanner

Tanner post-Colchester United | We're glad to progress | Cardiff

Ollie Tanner, 21, has started to show signs of his potential while still being a young prospect with one EFL Cup appearance against Colchester United.

The nimble winger put up a strong performance against the League Two team, taking on his man at will and coming close to scoring.

After putting on standout performances for non-league team Lewes, the teenager attracted widespread attention. Tottenham Hotspur even agreed to a fee for the player in January of last year, but personal conditions could not be reached.

He passed up joining Cardiff last summer in favor of a lackluster loan with York City, appearing in just eight games for the Minstermen.

Tanner, despite a disastrous transfer, has continued to impress new manager Bulut and has been rewarded with three Championship games, including a start against Ipswich Town.

Cian Ashford

After receiving his first professional deal back in June 2021, Ashford has kept up his impressive performance as he rose through the Cardiff City levels.

At only 16 years old, the attacking force made his U23 squad debut. He has since impressed for the development team, starting the season with four goals against Haverfordwest County in the Nathaniel MG Cup before tallying a goal and an assist against Barnsley U21s.

The young, offensively oriented youngster has been rewarded with his professional debut this season. A late cameo against Colchester United in the EFL Cup spurred the start of his senior career, and he then made another cameo appearance against Birmingham City in the next round of the competition.

Joel Colwill

Rubin Colwill has shown Cardiff City’s first-team road, and his brother Joel is hoping to follow.

The 18-year-old, a fellow midfielder, has advanced through several Welsh national team age groups and has been chosen for the U21 squad during the current international break.

This comes after the intriguing possibility played the final 30 minutes of his professional debut against Colchester United, helping the Bluebirds win in a penalty shootout.

After playing some senior football, he is more motivated than ever to do well for his club and country and cement a spot in Cardiff’s starting lineup.

Joel Colwill remarked, “I play a similar position to him, and I’ve tried to just follow in his footsteps really,” when speaking to Y Clwb Pêl-droed during the international break. I wanted to play in the midfield because he did. I wanted to play for Cardiff because he did, so I did. I’ve always desired to be able to do what he has.
