Seven former Reading FC stars on the hunt for new clubs
For another year, the summer transfer window has come and gone, with billions of pounds being spent throughout the UK to try and bolster teams in advance of the upcoming season.
However, it is not always as glamorous as it seems, as thousands of players continue to be available as free agents with no guarantee of
a contract in the near future.
Nearly 20 players left the Royals this summer before the transfer window closed on September 1; The Reading Chronicle has already
looked at those players.
But what about those that haven’t?
Take a look below at seven who are still on the hunt for new employers with the season already well underway.
Ryan Bertrand
A vastly experienced full-back, Bertrand spent the 2009/10 season on loan in Berkshire and made over 50 appearances for Reading-
finishing third in the Player of the Season poll.
Winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2011, the 34-year-old left Stamford Bridge permanently in 2015 and went on to enjoy
six positive years with Southampton, making over 230 appearances for the Saints.
Released in 2021, he played just 11 times for Leicester City over two seasons and was let go upon their relegation to the Championship.
Linked with Manchester United over the summer, the former England international is yet to sign on with a new club.
Tariqe Fosu
An Academy graduate during a golden period of the early 2010s, the winger managed just one first-team appearance on the final day
of the 2014/15 season before his release.
Charlton Athletic picked him up in 2017/18 and the midfielder impressed at the Valley, earning a move to rivals Oxford United.
10 goals in 33 appearances tempted Championship Brentford into a punt, paying £750,000 to take him back to the second tier.
Fosu spent two seasons on loan back in the Championship with Stoke City and Rotherham United. He made over 60 appearances in
four years as the Bees won promotion to the Premier League.
He was released from the Brentford Community Stadium last season after making 19 appearances for the Millers, scoring just once.
He has not yet found a new team.
Chris Martin
A very productive Championship player over long-term spells at Norwich City and Derby County, the Scotland international arrived on
loan at Reading for the second half of the 2017/18 campaign.
Having finished third the previous season, the Royals were battling relegation under Jaap Stam and Paul Clement when the 34-year-old arrived.
Not impressing the SCL Stadium faithful, although it was later revealed that the forward was struggling with illness while in Berkshire,
the striker scored just once in 10 appearances- this was coming off the back of a season where he hit double figures for Fulham.
Martin scored 15 goals in three seasons with Bristol City before permanently leaving Pride Park in 2020. He also scored four goals
during a brief stint with Queens Park Rangers last season.
The forward, who has been linked with a return to Loftus Road, is still looking for a club
Danny Drinkwater
A product of the Manchester United youth system, it was a five-year spell at Leicester City where he came to prominence.
A key member of Nigel Pearson’s side that won the Championship in 2013/14, he was a key member of the incredible side that would
somehow win the Premier League under Claudio Ranieri.
Chelsea paid £35 million to sign the midfielder after that incredible campaign, which earned him three caps for England.
Drinkwater made 22 appearances in his first campaign but only one in the next four years, which was a bad move for all parties.
Aston Villa and Turkish club Kasimpasa- Reading were signing a totally different Danny Drinkwater for the 2021/22 season after he
played just 17 times in three years while on loan with Burnley.
The 33-year-old played 34 times for Veljko Paunovic and Paul Ince, seeming generally at ease in a Championship team in the bottom half.
His contract with West London terminated at the conclusion of the season, and it appears that his time in Berkshire did not do much
to entice teams to take a chance on him because he has not yet found a new club.
Dejan Tetek
One of the few bright sparks of a dull 2021/22 campaign was the emergence of teenage midfielder Dejan Tetek.
Impressing his compatriot, and manager, Paunovic- he appeared 21 times under the former Serbia youth manager.
Unfortunately, injuries blighted the last 18 months of his career and the 20-year-old has failed to feature since 2022.
A Serbia Under-21 international, Tetek had a long-term trial at League One Wycombe Wanderers over the summer, but nothing
appears to have come of this.
Reports in Serbia have linked the youngster with a move to Vojvodina FK.
Liam Moore
The former Leicester City youngster arrived at Reading in 2016 and quickly became a mainstay, playing over 230 times in the next seven years.
However, it was not all smooth sailing; owner Dai Yongge removed the previous club captain from his position and kicked him out of
the first-team setup.
The 30-year-old has had a difficult year with reoccurring troubles after suffering a knee injury while on loan at Stoke City.
After being given a second chance by Paul Ince, Moore made it through three games before collapsing, frustratingly bringing an end to
his stay at Berkshire.
The Jamaican international said there are offers pouring in for a return to English football during a recent appearance on a podcast.
Junior Hoilett
Canada’s captain Hoilett, a fixture in the Championship since 2013 for clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Queens Park Rangers, and
Cardiff City, joined Reading on a free transfer in 2021.
In just two years, the winger made 62 appearances, and during challenging circumstances in Berkshire, he won over many fans.
The 33-year-old turned down a new contract over the summer after doing well at the Qatar World Cup.
Hoilett is yet to find a new job despite being extensively linked to Huddersfield Town and former manager Neil Warnock throughout
the summer.
