Teden Mengi is having his medical at Luton Town ahead of joining from Manchester United.

As reported by Mail Sport earlier this week, the young defender will join the club permanently for an undisclosed fee.

Mengi, 21, spent previous loan spells at Derby County and Birmingham City but his next move will see him remain in the Premier League.

The switch is a step up, with most of his football at United coming at U-23 level.

Luton boss Rob Edwards has been keen to strengthen ahead of the deadline and Mengi, who had less than one year left on his Old Trafford deal, will shortly arrive.

Mengi broke into United’s first-team in 2020 after signing a professional deal following his rapid progression through the youth set-up.

However, he has made just two senior appearances and played a total of 35 minutes.

A host of first-team centre backs are ahead of him in the pecking order, including Jonny Evans, who looks poised to earn a one-year contract at his former side.

Another United outcast, Axel Tuanzebe, is on trial at Luton, meanwhile.

The Hatters are joint bottom of the top-flight after a testing start to the season.

Manchester United and Luton Town have agreed a deal for Teden Mengi with the centre-back undergoing a medical today, according to reports.

The Red Devils are looking to complete a number of deals before the transfer deadline on Friday with incomings and outgoings expected before the window shuts.

Man Utd have only raised about £32m in player sales this summer – although Dean Henderson looks set to complete a move to Crystal Palace soon – which is some way off the reported £100m target set at the beginning of the window.

Their lack of big sales has seen Ten Hag’s budget stretched with rumours they will have to settle for a loan deal if they bring in Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat to the club before the deadline.

And Mengi could now be the latest player to leave Old Trafford this summer with Football Insider claiming that he is ‘having a medical at Luton Town at 7am on Thursday’.

Premier League newcomers Luton have ‘agreed the terms of a permanent deal’ with Man Utd and Rob Edwards’ side see him ‘as a potential star in the making and capable of thriving in the Premier League’.

: Man Utd forced to loan Amrabat and Cucurella because of Ed Woodward mistakes?

Mengi had already entered the final 12 months of his contract at Man Utd and he is now set to make the move to Luton after loan spells at Derby County and Birmingham City in the last couple of years.

A report earlier today insisted that Fiorentina’s Amrabat had been given the ‘green light’ to ‘undergo a medical’ after Man Utd made a ‘breakthrough in their bid to sign’ the Morocco international.

But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Red Devils “have not sent any loan deal bid” for Amrabat yet with “conversations” taking place.

Romano wrote in his Caught Offside column:”Despite reports, I’m told that Manchester United have not sent any loan deal bid for Sofyan Amrabat. The only thing that happened yesterday was that Man United had conversations, via intermediaries, with Fiorentina.

“They didn’t send an official bid, but Fiorentina have been clear that they could be open to a loan move, though only if there is an obligation to buy clause. They basically want a permanent transfer, and would accept a loan-to-buy deal.

“So now it’s on United, but for now there is no loan bid, that’s something all my sources are denying. Let’s see what happens but for now Amrabat remains a top target for Man United and talks will continue.

“In terms of departures in that position for United, I think Donny van de Beek still has high, very high chances to leave. There are some options, but not Lorient or Genoa as of now, despite rumours.
