Bristol City and Coventry City told transfer fee for Barnsley star
A new name has emerged for Bristol City – but they face competition from Championship rivals.
Bristol City are interested in signing Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles, according to reports.
Alan Nixon, a journalist who specialises in EFL and transfer content for The Sun, has posted on his Patreon that the Robins hold an interest. It is reported that it will cost them £2m to sign him and that Championship rivals Coventry City are also interested.
The 23-year-old was on loan at the Den last season, and he made 22 appearances in the Championship last term for the Lions getting one goal and an assist. The Sky Blues have money to spend following Gustavo Hamer’s move to Premier League side Sheffield United.
He has spent a majority of his career in the Championship, making 124 appearances in English football’s second tier. He has scored nine times and created six goals in those games.
Styles has mainly played as a left-sided midfielder but can also play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, right midfielder as well as defensive midfield. His versatility is something that could be of use to Nigel Pearson who likes working with smaller squads but using players that are versatile by being able to play in more than one position.
“There is a lot of sellable assets throughout the team,” said Tykes manager Neil Collins to Football Heaven last week.
“Callum is no different to any of those guys. He’s a really good player.
“He’s a player I’m sure a lot of team admirer but for now he’s a Barnsley player and someone that I really like and would love to keep hold of.
“As long as he continues to play the way he has been we’ll be happy and I’m sure that’ll just make more people interested.”
Styles was in Bristol in fact this weekend, as he featured for the Yorkshire outfit in their 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers in League One.
