After suffering a heart attack last month, Dejan Milojevic, the assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and a mentor to two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, was laid to rest on Monday in his home country of Serbia.

On a soggy day in a Belgrade cemetery, hundreds of people paid their respects, among them Warriors coach Steve Kerr. His old Serbian teammates carried a casket covered in flowers.

Kerr’s absence from Monday night’s game against the Utah Jazz was revealed by the organization on Monday. In his absence, the team’s acting head coach is assistant coach Kenny Atkinson.

Following a medical incident during a private team meal, Milojevic was hospitalized in Salt Lake City, where he passed away on January 17. Milojevic, 46, was a member of the team that assisted the Warriors in winning the NBA title in 2022.

Following his passing, the Serbian basketball community and fans expressed their deepest sympathies to Milojević. Before he turned to coaching, Milojević was a star player for Partizan Belgrade and other clubs in Serbia, Montenegro, Turkey, and Spain.

The president of the Serbian Basketball Federation, Predrag Danilovic, asserted that everyone loved and respected Milojevic.
