A few of the front seven players that are interviewing today have mentioned that they have met or had a formal interview with the Niners:
The positioning and predicted movements of the players are more important than the players themselves. Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead are both under contract with the 49ers; the only other defensive lineman following them is Kalia Davis. Whether it’s through free agency or the NFL Draft, the Niners have no option except to bolster the position this offseason.
Thinking ahead, edge rushers belong to the same category. Chase Young, Randy Gregory, and Clelin Ferrell are all unrestricted free agents. Other from Nick Bosa, the only players with contracts are Robert Beal Jr. and Drake Jackson. Thus, it will be another offseason in which the Niners allocate resources to their preferred position.
Maason Smith, DT, LSU Formal Smith, a former 5-star prospect, was the top-ranked player in Louisiana for the 2021 class upon graduation from high school. With four sacks as a rookie and a bright future, he was a prospective All-American. Smith, who reached a top speed of 19.2 miles per hour, was ranked No. 17 on Bruce Feldman’s “freaks list” at The Athletic.
However, he tore his ACL in the first quarter of the season’s opening game as a sophomore. Smith started to pick up his game this past year as he recovered more and more from his ACL injury. Although he didn’t perform as well as he could have when healthy, the 6-foot-6, 315-pound 21-year-old still has promise.
