There was plenty of intrigue in the Big 12’s new 16-team lineup in 2024, and the mayhem should return in the ’25 college football season. Expect this league to be rather volatile from week to week because there isn’t much difference in the 16 clubs’ overall program structure or recruiting practices. Arizona State, Kansas State, BYU, and Iowa State are the top candidates in the way-too-early projections for ’25. Nonetheless, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, Colorado, Utah, and Kansas are among the top teams in the Big 12’s second division.

It wouldn’t be shocking to see a sleeper (or two) emerge in the ’25 title picture given how chaotic (and with little differentiation among teams) the ’24 race for a position in the Big 12 Championship was. The return of Rich Rodriguez to West Virginia is a major storyline to follow, and Houston should be significantly better in coach Willie Fritz’s second season. Oklahoma State tries to rebound after a dreadful 3-9 season, with UCF, Arizona, and Cincinnati all capable of contending for bowl eligibility.
Considering rankings or projections for the 2025 college football season is never too early. In light of this, Athlon offers their preliminary 2025 Big 12 power rankings:under Kenny Dillingham, the coach. Running back Cam Skattebo will be missed, but quarterback Sam Leavitt is back to lead an offense that finished the season with an average of 32.9 points per game and came very close to defeating Texas in the Peach Bowl.
