An ex-Wake Forest receiver is added to Virginia Tech football’s transfer site.

used the transfer portal today to get a former Wake Forest wide receiver. The Hokies’ third season under head coach Brent Pry was disappointing. Unfortunately, Virginia Tech’s season ended with a 6-7 overall record and a 4-4 ACC record due to injuries and uncertainty around the quarterback position. Pry is under pressure to perform well in his fourth year at Blacksburg as he enters 2025.

On Thursday, the Hokies did receive some positive news. Former Wake Forest wide receiver Donavon Greene has formally signed a contract with Virginia Tech football, according to Pete Nakos, College Sports Business and Transfer Portal Reporter for On3. With the Demon Deacons, the 6’2, 210-pound wide receiver has caught 102 passes for 1,853 yards and three scores. Greene is still eligible for another year.

The Hokies have a 16-21 overall record and a 10-13 conference record in their three years under Brent Pry. Virginia Tech football ended the season poorer than it did the year before, despite the fact that Pry has led the team to two consecutive bowl games. The offense, which averaged 28.2 points per game in 2024, was primarily to blame for the inconsistencies. Overall, that metric placed eleventh in the ACC. The Hokies’ defense was mainly dependable on the opposite end of the ball, giving up only 22.8 points per contest.

In every game it lost, Brent Pry’s team was competitive overall. This program is competitive, as evidenced by the fact that only two of the Hokies’ seven losses were by more than one score. However, Virginia Tech finished second bottom in the ACC in passing yards this season, proving that the quarterback uncertainty was too much to overcome.

Throughout 2024, Brent Pry experimented with three under-center players: Colin Schlee, William Watson III, and Kyron Drones. The Hokies will have some experience in the quarterback room next season because Drones and Watson III were already signed this offseason. However, this offseason, Virginia Tech football is losing the majority of its receiving core. Donavon Greene will therefore be expected to start playing a big offensive role right away. All things considered, acquiring Greene is a crucial step for a football program hoping to relive its heyday. Under renowned coach Frank Beamer, the Hokies have recently competed for and won ACC crowns. Virginia Tech is one of the programs that will have to manually compete for a berth in this field under the new twelve-team College Football Playoff. But that ascent starts with a far improved 2025 campaign. The Hokies and their devoted supporters are deserving of it. Additionally, Brent Pry may require it for his future in Blacksburg.
